Well...

He wasn't in a hotel room. This was good.

And there was still a husband. And a hungover minion downstairs.

Interesting.

He wanted waffles now. So, he was in the kitchen. Making waffles.

"Mmm, waffly goodness."

Aly pulled back just a bit to look up at him. "I have a very important question then."

Wade frowned, looking down at her warily. "What?"

"Why is there a zonked out Rikku on your couch?"

Wade frowned, thinking the answer was obvious. "She passed out at Caritas last night and I wanted to make sure she didn't die in her sleep?"

Aly grinned and squeezed him again. "Just making sure. Rather it be that then something else."

He frowned again. "What else would it be?"

"She got hurt or something? She was really sick? Something else happened that she needed a friend immediately?" Aly sighed. "I didn't mean anything bad by it."

"Sorry," He muttered, pulling away. "Used to people assuming the worst."

And the weekend sure as hell brought that back up.

She caught his arm for half a second. "Hey Wade? You're my best friend. I'm never going to assume the worst of you."

And regardless of yesterday not happening, that still needed to be said.

That would be nice to believe. It really would. It would also be nice to believe in the Easter Bunny again.

"You have no idea what I've done before coming here. I'm not a nice guy, Aly."

"I'm not naive enough to think that you have ever been all sunshine and puppies," Aly said then added wryly. "But then people who are all sunshine are boring." More seriously, she continued, "I see a lot, and I like you no matter what."

"I don't think you are naive." He sighed and leaned against the counter, looking down at his feet. "Christ, by the time I was your age, I was already like this and working as a mercenary. I've been doing this for over thirty years now. Mary was really just the tip of the iceberg in my long list of bad decisions."

"And if you're pointing out how bad the decisions were, you're obviously already aware of it," she replied, studying his body language. "What's the point in me judging and making a fuss?"

"I wanted to kill her. She wanted me to kill her," He said quietly. "So I could be like before again. And I would have. Would have killed her and not felt a thing. If Nate and Arashi hadn't shown up."

"But they did," she said as quietly. "It's not worthwhile to beat yourself up about what may have happened."

It was like putting an open bottle of whiskey in front of a recovering alcoholic.

"Yeah."

Aly moved closer to him. "Still think what I said in the beginning holds true. Regardless."

Then she was kinda naive to him now. Maybe in a few years she'd know better about his type.

"Yeah." He shook his head. "Your waffles are getting cold."

"If things change, they change," she said, moving over to get her plate. "For now, don't try to push me away. Too stubborn for that."

"I noticed that." He looked up, still avoiding her eye. "You talk to Nate?"

Aly nodded. "I was worried."

Wade nodded slowly, still looking off at some spot in the room. "He won't tell you much, you know. If you wanted to find out about my past. We know too much about each other to tell others."

"I wasn't looking for dirt on you," she said softly. "I just wanted to know what was going on."

"I know," Wade replied. "You'd ask me first. Just letting you know that Nate is a bad person to get information from. He does that messiah thing and is just generally annoying."
